What is drip edge?
Drip edge is a bent metal flashing strip installed along the eaves and gable edges of a roof to direct rainwater into gutters and shield the fascia from water infiltration.
Metal drip edge is a flashing component bent into an L or similar profile and fastened to the roof deck edge before shingles are installed. It sits just above the gutter on the eave side and extends over the fascia board, creating a controlled path for water runoff. On gable ends, drip edge prevents water from running behind the fascia and into the wall cavity.
The primary purpose is directing water flow. Without drip edge, rain can wick backward under the overhang, rotting the fascia board and potentially damaging soffit vents, insulation, and framing. Connecticut building codes and most manufacturer specifications require drip edge installation, especially on new construction and roof replacements in Greater Hartford.
Drip edge comes in aluminum and galvanized steel, in eave and rake (gable) configurations. Proper installation means the lower leg sits inside the gutter channel and the upper leg is secured to the roof deck with roofing nails before the first course of shingles. If gutters are absent or undersized, drip edge still prevents fascia saturation by angling water away from the wall line.
Inspectors and roofers assess drip edge condition as part of routine roof and gutter evaluation work. Gaps, rust, missing sections, or improper overlap reduce its effectiveness and signal potential water entry risk.
